An amusing overstrike of a Postumus 'double sestertius' on a sestertius of Sabina
Lot 2395
Postumus, Romano-Gallic Emperor, 260-269. 'Double Sestertius' (Orichalcum, 32 mm, 24.33 g, 3 h), uncertain mint. IMP C POS[TVMVS] P F AVG Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Postumus to right. Rev. [MONE]TA AVG Moneta standing front, head to left, holding scales in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. Cf. Bastien 387. Some weakness and with traces of overstriking, otherwise, very fine.

This 'double sestertius' of Postumus, like many others, was overstruck on an earlier coin - in this case, a sestertius of Sabina Augusta (128–136/7). The much smaller dies used for Postumus, which almost resemble those of an antoninianus, give the piece a somewhat amusing appearance and serve as a symbol of the turbulence that Roman currency endured in the 3rd century amid endless crises.
